Buying digital signage displays: what matters in professional screens

Buying a digital signage display: brightness, operating hours, resolution and size — what really matters in professional screens.

Professional display or ordinary television?

A consumer television is built for a few hours of home cinema — not for continuous operation in a shop window. Professional digital signage displays are brighter, more durable and rated for 16/7 or 24/7 use. If you want to display reliably over the long run, they work out cheaper. How display, player and CMS work together is shown in our digital signage guide.

What to look for when buying

  • Brightness: from around 350–500 cd/m² indoors, considerably more for a shop window against sunlight.
  • Operating hours: 16/7 for shop hours, 24/7 for continuous use.
  • Resolution: 4K for razor-sharp content and readability up close.
  • Orientation: portrait and landscape — important for shop windows.
  • Built-in player: a display with an integrated computing module saves external hardware.
  • Size & viewing distance: the further away, the larger.

Which size for which use?

Rule of thumb: checkout and counter displays 32–43", shop windows 43–55", reception and lobby 55–65", large areas and video walls from 75". When in doubt, go one size up — every screen looks smaller from a distance.
